This is a question from the gmail suggest a labs forum about  use of gmail in outlook.   The reply is my suggestion

Hello!

My parents are using an e-mail address from their ISP.
The e-mail messages are just saved for one single day on the webmail
server (so I’ve configured Outlook for them).

After several computer crashes, they lost their received messages over
and over again.
My idea was to create an gmail-account for them, and import their e-
mailaddress from their ISP.
No problems so far :) .

But my parents really want to keep using their e-mail address from the
ISP, so I’ve added that address under the option to send e-mails with
another address.

Now everything works like charm with gmail using the webbrowser.
But, they’re also used to use Outlook, so I configured Outlook for
them.
Everything works, except one single thing: The e-mails they’re
sending, are being sent by gmail, instead of their e-mail form the
ISP.

Is it possible, to create a function or Lab feature, so that they can
use their own e-mail address via gmail, in outlook?

(Sorry for my sloppy explanation!).

I hope someone can help me =).

Regards.

OK,

You are almost there.  I am working on an email project called “Easy
Email” www.easy-email.net you may want to take a look at the video’s
there.  But to answer your questions here.

In gmail when you configured the pop mail accounts  you may send or
receive email inside of gmail using any of the enabled pop mail
accounts.

When you are using outlook what you need to do is configure in outlook
the pop mail account you want to use as a separate account.  All the
mail is funneled via gmail via the imap features.

For example.  if the parents account is
[email address]
and your gmail account is
[email address]
Configure both accounts
then you will get mail at both accounts and be able to send in each
account.

If you are using the gmail web client you can already do this without
any configuration
but in outlook you have to configure each account.

Personally I hate outlook and would suggest Thunderbird, but  if your
parents insist use outlook.

Take the time to show them in gmail how to do this as well.

Have you imported all their messages and contacts into gmail yet?

Gmail has  7  gigs of storage so plenty of space to save  messages.
If you need more space  it’s 5.00 a year for an extra 20 gigs of
space.

Show them how to use Picasa to save all their photos online as well.
Another benefit of a gmail account.

Explain to them that when that hard drive goes and it will, having
their photos and other important memories online is a great option.

Hope this  helps.

I taught seniors for several years and I know the resistance to change
and the unreasonable attachment to email accounts.
